Hey Everyone! I know it has been a few weeks since I posted a DIY project, so I wanted to get back up and running with this quick and easy project! If you have read my blog before, you know I am obsessed with metallic everything…metallic magnets, metallic decor, metallic art (here, here and here), so I decided to add some metallic flair to these cute turquoise mugs.
I bought these turquoise mugs at Target this weekend for $1.99 each (get them here). I decided I wanted to use gold spray paint as an accent to the turquoise color.
Instead of spraying the entire mug, I decided to use painters tape to add a design to the mugs.
I used some paper towels to keep the rest of the mug clean (you can also use newspaper).
Then, using gold spray paint, I sprayed the mug. I allowed each coat of paint to dry for at least an hour before spraying again. In total, I sprayed the mugs three times. After the final coat dried, I peeled off the painters tape.
Now, if you don’t plan on scrubbing these mugs or putting them in the dishwasher, you don’t need to do anything else. However, I wanted these mugs to be dishwasher safe. To do this, I put the mugs in the oven for 30 minutes at 300 degrees to bake and lock in the paint.
Voila! These came out great! I haven’t put these in the dishwasher yet, but when I do, I’ll add an update about how they held up.
Update: I have put these mugs through the dishwasher a few times now and other than some water spots on the gold paint that I was able to wipe away, they seem to be holding up just fine!
These really look great and add a fun flair to my coffee mugs.
Thanks for stopping by!! Come back again soon!

March 25, 2015 at 1:04 pmLove the mugs. I think I'm going to make a few. I would do black mugs with silver paint. Would be a nice mug to have at my office for tea in the morning. I never knew about putting the mugs in the oven for 30 minutes at 300 degrees to bake and lock in the paint.

March 25, 2015 at 8:53 pmBlack and Silver sounds great! Send me a picture when you are done! The oven trick is supposed to work, but I haven't had a chance to try it out in the dishwasher yet. To be safe, you can just hand wash the mug if you don't trust the baking trick.
