Hey Everyone! I recently revealed my Breakfast Nook Makeover and I wanted to share some progress that we made on the dining room! When the whole family came over last year for Thanksgiving, this room was very sad looking, but our dining room and table set up for this year’s Thanksgiving is going to knock everyone’s socks off!!
I just need to stay far away from the kitchen where all that cooking is going on!
Back when we first bought this house, it looked like a paint wheel had thrown up in every room. There were deep browns, reds, greens and beige’s in every room. Sometimes, those colors were mixed together into one room. Seriously…half of the rooms in the house had “accent” walls in deep browns and reds.
When we heard that everyone wanted to come to our house for our “First Thanksgiving”, we figured we better get the dining room together quickly. Our first step was painting the room and the trim that we had installed. Another weird thing about this house is that none of the windows had trim on them. My dad helped us find rubber moulding that we were able to use around the half-moon windows in the front of the house.
This stuff was not cheap, but we didn’t have many options, so we just went for it
Our next order of business was to replace the outdated chandelier with a more modern light fixture. Normally I would have tried to salvage the existing light fixture, but I really didn’t like the bones of this fixture, so I decided to start from scratch.
We added this more modern light fixture that I found at Lowe’s. We also painted the whole house in different neutral greys. The entire downstairs was painted in Benjamin Moore “Paper White”.
I had this great mirror in my old apartment, so I decided to keep it and use it in the dining room. It is from the old Bombay Company, which went out of business a few years ago. Does anyone remember that place? I used to love walking around in there when I was a kid!
I also had my eye on this West Elm rug for a loooong time. I waited until it went on sale for Black Friday last year and scooped it up at 25% off.
So this is what the dining room looks like now. I am still in the process of deciding what I want to do on the windows. Right now, I just haven’t found the right curtains yet. I also have some great fabric that I want to use to add some lumbar pillows (see my envelope pillow tutorial here). I will definitely post an update once we finish this room!!
Thanks for checking out my Dining Room Makeover!!!
